A Sampler Platter of New British Music

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments

As “Rehab” was making its way to America, it obviously opened some kind of floodgate. Ever since Amy Winehouse invaded our hearts, ears, and tabloids, British acts have been pouring into our music scene. And the good news? Most of them are great.

Yes.. the latest British Invasion began before “Rehab.” Lily Allen and Sandi Thom and a few others dropped their records first, but Ms. Beehive, with her top ten hit and her Grammys, was the first one to make a monumental impact, putting herself up there with Coldplay in terms of Limey Acts We Love.

I hope the following reach her level of notoriety, because all of them rule.

(1) Estelle — I only know her single “American Boy,” but what a great song! The blend of old-school soul and modern techno catches my ear and refuses to let go, and the mandatory verse from Kanye West sounds especially fun and breezy. Listening to samples of her album, it seems like the song “Pretty Please (Love Me)”– featuring Cee-Lo–is a great throwback to the girl group era. (Here’s the video for “American Boy.”)

(2) Duffy – Since buying her album “Rockferry,” I’ve been listening to parts of it almost every day. And sure, her vintage soul sound is similar to Amy Winehouse’s, but it isn’t the same. She’s more Dusty Springfield and La Bouffant is more Shirley Bassey. And Duffy can belt enormous, rafter-shaking notes that make you want to join a church. But you know… a church where all the sermons are about lovers who done you wrong.

(3) The Ting Tings “Shut Up and Let Me Go” got exposure in an iPod commercial, and as with Sara Bareilles and Yael Naim, the commercial just points the way to incredible music. Singer Katie White has a bratty British voice that reminds me of Saffron, the lead singer of Republica. (Whoa! Remember them?!?!) And that’s great, because a snotty attitude goes perfectly with bubbly dance tunes (“Fruit Machine”) and stripped-down, percussion-heavy booty shakers (“That’s Not My Name.”) More than anything, this music is fun, and sometimes that’s all you need.

(4) The Last Shadow PuppetsThis band is actually the side project of Alex Turner from The Arctic Monkeys and Alex Kane from The Rascals. I don’t know the Rascals, but I love the Arctic Monkeys’ nasty rock. However, I’m also enjoying the lusher, more elegant sound of this record. Touches of The Cure and 80s New Wave, lots of grand instrumental sweeps, and some lovely singing… It’s great music to get lost in while you’re on the subway. Or in the rain. Or frankly, at the grocery store. (I know from experience on the last one!)
