I love David Denby’s writing. He’s one of my favorite critics working right now, and this review of “The Incredible Hulk” shows why. More than just the movie, he’s thinking about the very idea of the Hulk himself, and I agree with some of the things he says about why the Hulk is always destined to be boring.
See what you think…

The Hulk can be very, VERY boring, but I have encountered one Hulk story that titillated me to no end. Planet Hulk.
The general gist of Planet Hulk is that the heroes of Earth get tired of living in fear of the Hulk flattening cities, so they trick him onto a rocketship destined for a calm, peaceful, uninhabited world. Too bad the planet it actually lands on is one part Russel Crowe’s Gladiator and one part Mad Max.
The story that gets told concentrates solely on The Hulk fighting his way through he gladiator matches for his freedom, at which point he unwillingly becomes a savior figure to the slaves of the planet.
The great thing about the story is that it largely removes Bruce Banner and the tortured psyche aspect of most Hulk tales and gives the the Hulk an actual motivation and plot to work through.
So if you want an entertaining Hulk story, give it a read at your local Borders.
