Sigh… Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” is next week’s number one single.

Even more disheartening? It’s the 1,000th number one single in America. That’s kind a milestone.

Billboard magazine starts counting number one hits from the ascendancy of “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock.” Based on their count, here are some other songs that have been benchmark chart toppers:

100: “Big Bad John,” Jimmy Dean (Nov. 6, 1961)
200: “Paint It Black,” The Rolling Stones (June 11, 1966)
300: “Maggie May” / “Reason to Believe,” Rod Stewart (Oct. 2, 1971)
400: “Lovin’ You,” Minnie Riperton (April 5, 1975)
500: “What a Fool Believes,” Doobie Brothers (April 14, 1979)
600: “Like a Virgin,” Madonna (Dec. 22, 1984)
700: “Together Forever,” Rick Astley (June 18, 1988)
800: “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss,” P.M. Dawn (Nov. 30, 1991)

Some of these songs are undeniable classics — “Maggie May,” “Like a Virgin,” and “Paint It Black” are like Pop Music 101.

Then you’ve got songs that are excellent examples of their genre: “Lovin’ You” is great R&B, “Big Bad John” is chuckle-worthy classic country, and “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss,” by the unjustly forgotten PM Dawn, is one of the best pop/hip-hop songs of all time.

And what of “Together Forever” and “It’s Gonna Be Me?” Less enlightened individuals might dismiss these tracks as cheesy, but seriously… I defy you not to dance when Astley is playing.

See?!?! You’re dancing, right? It’s okay. I am too!

And the Doobie Brothers? Well, I love the Doobies, but “What a Fool Believes” is musty like a gold lame leisure suit.

I hope “I Kissed a Girl” ends up forgotten by the culture at large, just like that hit by the Doobie Doobs. That’s my only solace on this dark day. Of course, if Perry’s next single is called “(I’m a Marketing Ploy) And It Turns Me On,” then all is forgiven.
