The Movie: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (opening October 3)
The Buzz: Michael Cera wants to validate the (much-deserved) affection he generated after Juno, Superbad, and Arrested Development. Hence, this indie comedy with a carefully constructed soundtrack about two unlikely twentysomethings falling in unlikely love.

The Review: I’m hopeful, you guys. Much more than Garden State, this movie looks like it has the potential to fill the Graduate/John Hughes/…Say Anything void currently crippling American cinema. There just aren’t enough movies for saucy, sensitive teens who are totally confused yet also cool. Juno obviously did the trick, but we need more than one, people! And if Michael Cera is going to be in all of this decade’s Smart Teen movies, then so be it. (Note: I do not include Garden State in this group because it tries so hard to be part of it. The same strain also lames up Reality Bites)
Based on this preview, it seems like N&N could tick off every category on the Smart Teen Movie checklist:
- Witty comments from characters who seem like good people, and not just hollow, selfish jerks? Check! (Norah esepecially comes off as Juno, but with less overtly sculpted dialogue.)
- Villains from the popular/wealthy/pretty castes? Check!
- Bizarre third-act complication that adds some wild fantasy to an otherwise straightforward love story? Check! (See also: The Parent With Crushing Problems)
So… we’ll see. How great would it be if this and Juno gave us a one-two punch? Then we wouldn’t have to worry about the younger generation. They’d be all set for movies to watch in college, wistfully laughing with their friends about the emotions these Smart Teen Film helped them clarify. (And then in fifteen years, maybe these characters will be the basis for a J.C. Penney ad. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Denim Skirt.)
