I know that Flashback! is supposed to be on Thursday, but what good’s a rule if you can’t break it?
Anyway, I spent the day writing 3,000Â articles for 3,000Â publications, and while I’m happy to have the work, I’m also kind of punchy.
As proof, here’s a thought process I endured earlier today:
Thanks to a story I’m writing about the Broadway debut of Billy Elliot, I got to speak to Elton John (who wrote the music) on the phone. This led to me meeting Sir Elton in person yesterday, while we were both standing backstage at the Apollo Theater (Herbie Hancock and Elvis Costello were also there. It’s a long story.)
I told Sir Elton that I had seen the tech rehearsal of Billy’s first act, and with nervous eyes, he asked how it went. I said that considering they’ve got three weeks of rehearsal left, the cast is in great shape.
Sir Elton was so happy to hear my report that he grabbed my face with both hands and said, “Bless you!” I noticed he was wearing a watch that probably cost more than my entire education.
And that was an awesome, trippy experience. As I was remembering it this morning, I thought,
I got my face grabbed by pop royalty. But he’s not the king of pop. That’s Michael Jackson. Or it used to be.
And damn… after he crowned himself, Michael Jackson made some weird songs. Like that one he did with Eddie Murphy.
And then… ding! For the first time in years, I thought about “Wazupwitu,” the Eddie Murphy-Michael Jackson duet whose video was dubbed a “breakthrough” by MTV. I remember liking the video so much that I bought the song on cassingle. But keep in mind, this was the early nineties. My taste wasn’t as impeccable as it is today.
For those who remember it, prepare to have another taste of “Wazupwitu.” For those who never knew it, prepare to eat the magic.
And no matter who you are, do me a favor: Please post a comment containing the first five words this video brings to mind. For me, those words are, “Homoerotic, drug-addled, animated fever dream.”

I couldn’t even begin to select five words for that. I have to say that I have no memory of this song or this collaboration at all.
I think I am most struck by the random peace signs flying around willy-nilly. Also, while we have a collective cultural opinion about Michael Jackson and his sanity, I feel like this raises a lot of questions about Eddy Murphy and HIS sanity.
Also, Elton John grabbed your face?!
Your best response would have been “hold me closer, tiny dancer,” I think.

I can’t believe I’ve never see that video or heard that song. Five things I’ve noticed:
Stevie Wonders glasses
Diana Ross’ hair
X trip
Patty Cake
Early stages of MJ’s face melting off

All I can is that you can find just about anything on YouTube and this is right up there with the most disturbing thing I have ever seen!
Mark – so cool about Elton John. You’ve come a long way from TN!!

Hmmm…five words? How about:
Which one is the girl?
Or….
“village people picture pages sky” referring to Vanilla Sky….

5 words: Jagger, Bowie, and PM Dawn
There will be dancing in the streets adrift on a memory bliss.
More importantly though, you got to meet Sir Elton John AND he grabbed your face AND it didn’t even warrant a full post!? The man sang with Kiki Dee for heaven’s sake! This is world class blog material!

Five words:
“Let’s watch Bjork now, please.”

Wazupwit Eddie Murphy’s styling in this video? It looks like he came directly from (I hesitate to even say “straight from”) the Castro to shoot this thing. Truly painful to watch, this is. Also, I wonder if this inspired the Budweiser ad team to come up with their famous “Whazzup” commercial?

I was doing some reminiscing and I guess you’re still taking comments on this song and video. I actually remember seeing it on MTV and later telling one of my friends that I thought it was one of the best videos of the year. Say what you will about these two rich and famous guys just having some fun and trying to make more $$$, but the video itself still seems fresh. Five words? “Michael mostly sings one word.”

I’m just reminiscing too. I don’t remember this at all, but Michael looked like he was relaxed and having fun. Made me smile.
And Sir Elton grabbed your face? You’re my hero.
