After the jump, I’ll share some quick thoughts on recent episodes of Ugly Betty, The Amazing Race, and True Blood.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Ugly Betty: Remember last week when I was annoyed that so few shows are telling halfway believable stories about halfway relatable people? Well thanks, Ugly Betty! Last week’s episode, about Betty and Marc’s competition to get into an editorial training program, was moving, subtle, and decidedly un-campy. That last, sweet moment between Marc and Betty was also really touching.
Bonus points for the subplot about Justin’s high school crush. When that popular jock stops hanging out with him because he seems too gay? Damn. That’s the sting of truth, people, and Mark Indelicato’s acting really captured the mixture of shame and heartbreak that comes with a dismissal like that. And I love Hilda’s unflagging support of her son.
The Amazing Race: It was predictable that last night was a non-elimination leg, and I thought the entire leg was kind of dull. They couldn’t find anything more interesting to do in Moscow than march around, serve borscht, and haul bags of flour? Still, I love this show. I hope Nick and Starr take it all! But if not, then I’d be happy with either Ken and Tina OR Dallas and Toni. (If Dan and Andrew win, the universe will collapse.)
True Blood: Can the next season start tomorrow, please? I’m freaking out over here. What happened to Lafayette? Who is this woman that’s “nurturing” Tara? Why can she make vibration waves come off her body? What does it have to do with Sam? Is Jason going to kill vampires now? What happened to LAFAYETTE? AAAAH!!!

You could check the books . . . (although I understand there’s considerable diversion from the sources, some of it clever, some less so. Ball has his own axes to grind, queer Southern boy that he is, and the emphases of the miniseries reflect them.)
