The funnest fun fact of Grammys 2009

December 4th, 2008 · 7 Comments

What fun fact could be so much fun that it requires the word “funnest?”

Well… I’ll get to that. But first, some quick reactions to the nominees for the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.

  • It’s a good year for Best New Artist. All the nominees are strong choices, yet there are plenty of others who deserved a slot. Of the five–Jazmin Sullivan, The Jonas Brothers, Duffy, Adele, and Lady Antebellum–I’d be most likely to drop The Jonases, but I still respect their catchy pop. If I could add extra nominees, I’d choose Estelle, Sara Bareilles, and Leona Lewis.
  • Thank god “I Kissed a Girl” is not nominated for Song or Record of the Year. I would’ve tossed a snow globe.
  • Does it seem like Allison Krauss and Robert Plant are destined to win album of the year? Coldplay and Radiohead will split the rock vote and Lil’ Wayne is too hardcore for most voters. Ne-Yo might slip in there, but Kra-Plant appeal to the country bloc and the oldster bloc.
  • I’m so happy “Royal Flush” got a nomination for hip-hop song! I guess I’m not the only one who heard it.
  • Regarding the nominations concert: Christina Aguilera was awesome, but otherwise… not so much. How many times does Mariah Carey have to sound like that before we admit she’s lost her voice? And why was Dave Grohl goofing so hard on country music?
That said, here’s the funnest fun fact about this year’s awards:
One of the nominees for Best Hawaiian Music Album is “‘Ikena” by Daniel Ho and Tia Carrere.
Yes, Tia Carrere. From Wayne’s World. As in, “Ballroom Blitz,” “Why You Wanna Break My Heart?,” and “Campbell, I didn’t know you spoke Cantonese!”
Hands down, this is my favorite nomination of the year. Just when you think you know someone, you find out they’ve carved their own little corner of the sky. Next, we’ll learn Skeet Ulrich is a nationally ranked backgammonist.

Does it seem like Allison Krauss and Robert Plant’s album is one I should have loved, but found I just didn’t…or couldn’t?

Why yes. Yes, it does. Mark! Tell me why I didn’t like it. It’s giving me a complex.

    Head’s up!

This is Tia’s second Grammy nomination! Her first album was pretty amazing I gotta say. Listened to it on iTunes out of curiosity, ended up buying the album…

No way!!! Tia’s been nominated before? Thanks for the tip.

Clearly, she rules, and I didn’t even know it. Now I have to check out her music.

The Foo Fighters were disappointing last night but then along came Taylor Swift and made them look like they had given a classic performance by comparison. Seriously, what the hell did she do to that classic Brenda Lee song? My ears are still bleeding…

    Next thing you’ll be telling us that Milla Jovovich has an album out! {/ducking}
