Trailer Scaler: Friday the 13th (Reboot)

January 7th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Boo! I said… boo! Scared yet? Well, maybe the trailer for the upcoming reboot of Friday the 13th will do the trick. Or maybe you’ll think it’s even lamer than my ghost. Let’s find out… after the jump!

The Movie: Friday the 13th (opening February 13) (of course)

The Buzz: Jason X, which sends our favorite hockey mask to space, was a ludicrous piece of crap, and really, so was Freddy vs. Jason. If any franchise needs a cred-building do-over, it’s this one.

The Trailer:

The Review: Since I don’t care about Jared Padalecki, nostalgia is the main reason I’m interested in this movie. It’s a strange nostalgia, of course, since the first F13 I saw was the less-than-stellar Jason Takes Manhattan. (When you’re staying up late with a friend in ninth grade, all movies are good. ) But I did eventually see part one—take that Kevin Bacon!—and I liked it enough to understand why people used to give a damn.

Now I’m wondering… will this reboot retain the most interesting parts of the original? Will the killer, for instance, still be Jason’s mother? The preview makes it hard to tell, since it only trades in iconic images from the series and your standard horror tropes.

But since the preview is so generic, it doesn’t leave me expecting anything better than your basic genre flick. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like Michael Bay has once again decided that shock is better than sophistication.

Then again, even the original F13 isn’t high art, so I shouldn’t be surprised that the reboot looks like business as usual. Fortunately, I like that kind of business. Tell me that I’m getting what I’m expecting to get, and you’re still gonna get me in the theater. (Though how crazy would it have been if someone like Peter Jackson had directed this?)

The Rating: Two Recycled Machete Scenarios (out of five)

You’re absolutely right. Friday the 13th doesn’t need to be reinvented into a serious artistic project. Jason movies are all about the Lowest Common Denominator. Boobs and blood. They revel in their gratuitousness and wear it as a badge of honor. It’s what makes them so much fun! They’re kinda like a slasher version of Jerry Springer.

Personally, my favorite of the series is one of the most reviled entries: Jason X. So many great elaborate deaths and puns. The sleeping bag scene still cracks me up to this day. What about the rest of you?

IF Peter Jackson directed this film, I would go see it, even though I normally don’t go see horror films.

    Otherwise, wait ’til DVD?
