I’m still savoring the memory of Aretha Franklin’s diva-tastic performance of “America the Beautiful” at Obama’s inauguration.
Here’s why I loved it…
- That giant hat! Why have a small bow when you can have a gray explosion?
- Those ad-libs! I’m only sorry she didn’t name-check Chattanooga along with the Allegheny
mountains. - That voice! Um… no sarcasm on this one. I thought she sounded great. (Update: On second listen, no she doesn’t.)

The hat was the highlight of the ceremony! Will it get its own cabinet post?

Yes, the hat definitely gets its own cabinet post. It will be Secretary of Accessory Affairs, and it will placed ahead of the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for presidential succession.

I thought her ad-libs (Alleghenies, etc.) might have been taken from Dr. King’s “Dream” speech. Did I make that up? I didn’t rewatch the video…I don’t want to start up the waterworks again.
