Has everyone in the world either been on a game show or know someone who has been? Or is my life just really bountiful in this area?
Two days ago, I took the online test to be on Jeopardy!, so hopefully I’ll be on-stage with Alex Trebek very soon. However, I already know two people who were on the show, and one of them actually won his first game. But that’s just the tip of my game show iceberg…
- My boyfriend and our mutual friend won on Cash Cab
- My friend Jim (of Art Meets Comerce, who are my partners in this site) went on The Price Is Right and won big.
- A friend of my boyfriend’s was on the now-defunct Russian Roulette (under an assumed name, no less!)
- My friend’s family was on Family Feud in the 80s, and then years later, a picture of them from the show randomly appeared in special game show issue of TV Guide.
Is this normal? Is this how it goes for everyone? Since there are so many game shows, it seems possible, but I’m not sure. When I was young, getting on one of these things seemed like an impossible fantasy, and despite the mounting evidence to the contrary, I still kind of feel that way.
So what are your game show connections? (Bonus points if you actually host a game show.)

You guys are all UP ON the gameshow circuit, Mark!
My aunt was on Wheel of Fortune and won a little money.

i scour the city looking for that damn cash cab. i’ve even memorized the cab number, but to no avail. (apparently, my life could use a little more meaning).
i had a cousin on “the price in right” in the 80s. She won the Showcase Showdown, which included an RV and a trip to China.

A very close friend of mine was actually on Love Connection! He was one of the three guys and the girl choose him, so they got to go on the date and do the follow-up.

I took the same Jeopardy test, for the third time. I thought this one was the hardest yet. I want to get on that damn show SO. BAD.

I was a phone-a-friend for a friend of mine who was on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Fortunately, he called someone else when he needed help with the $250,000 question, ’cause I didn’t know it. It was very exciting, though; I had to sit by the phone waiting for his call (and since it’s taped, I had no idea what was going on).

I was on Jeopardy! in 1999. If only I’d bet it all, I would’ve won. As I like to say, “I lost on Jeopardy, baby.”
I was in a play once with a guy who was also on Jeopardy! – but he did better than me – he made it to the tournament of champions.

Do you get partial bonus points if you were on Jeopardy yourself but only came in second?

My former manager was not only on “Deal or no Deal,” she actually PICKED the million-dollar suitcase. Unfortunately she made a deal for $250,000. Still pretty sweet.

My only game-show connection is that Monty Hall (host of Let’s Make A Deal) is my mother’s cousin. He’s a lovely and generous man.

A high school classmate was on Wheel of Fortune in high school or college. She got greedy and hit bankrupt.
Hee.

I have a friend, Maureen, who was on Wheel of Fortune and won $13,000.

-2 guys who I’ve written with were on “Beauty and the Geek” (neither won)
-2 College Quiz Bowl teammates were on Jeopardy (one was a champion, the other not so much)
-My future sister-in-law was part of the challenge in a show called “I’d do anything” where she cross checked girls trying to win tickets to the ice-capades by scoring goals
-But most impressively (at the time): the girl alphabetically next to me from Jr. High through High School was on “Where in the World is Carmen San Diego”

These are some amazing experiences, people!
marm — I can’t believe you knew someone on Carmen Sandiego. SO COOL.
And yes, cayenne, you do get points for actually being on the show yourself. Coming in second is still amazing… getting on the show in the first place is huge.

An old friend of my dad’s was on Jeopardy for a couple of episodes about 12 years ago.
And if it counts, I have two people in my circle who have been contestants on Beauty and the Geek (one an acquaintance, the other one of my best friends for the past decade). And someone I went to summer camp with was on Survivor twice.

An old exboyfriend of mine’s best friends won (WON!) Double Dare Family edition.
They got a minivans and all sorts of random swag. The old boyfriend then inherited the Double Dare t-shirt and sported it through college. It was dope.

this is going to sound like a Ferris Bueller scene but here goes…
*an aunt was on Price is Right and won the showcase showdown. A piano and a house full of carpet, I think. We still have a VHS tape of her appearance somewhere.
*my best friend in elementary school had a sister that was considerably older and they looked very similar. that sister had a best friend that looked a lot like me. all through school, teachers would call my friend by her sister’s name and me by the friends name. well… the friend was on jeopardy and won multiple times. i am still waiting for my turn.
*matt cohen (who you should know) was a cast member on an improv gameshow called Life or Life Game or something. He played the piano, I think. this seems like i may have dreamt this or am making it up, not sure.
*one of my all time favorite short stories is ‘Little Expressionless Animals’ by David Foster Wallace and the plot revolves around Jeopardy. I have read it so many times that I think I know the characters. This probably does not count.

I was on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire four years ago (we actually filmed on Election Day, 2004, and I maintain that Bush’s victory threw me off my game, and is why I’m not a millionaire today), and I’m presently waiting to find out if I’ll be on this year’s College Jeopardy! – I got a callback and interview, and now just have to wait for the phone call in March. (Cross your fingers for me!!)

A guy from my husband’s church won the National Spelling Bee and was on Jay Leno. Imagine our surprise recently when we saw him on 1 vs. 100 (or whatever that was called).

not on a game show, no relatives, friends, neighbors, business associates, or even enemies on a game show. Nothing. Nada. Am I living on a different planet?

I would have said no until six months ago, but my cousin is going to be on Jeopardy! next month (taped in November).
Also, he’s been trying to get on since he was eligible for the college version, so don’t give up if you don’t make it on the show the first (or second or third) time you try.

I came in third on Jeopardy, and a friend was on Win Ben Stein’s Money. I think that might be it for people I’m close to.

Oh, but my whole point in commenting was to say how much I want to be on Cash Cab!! Best show ever.

I have friends and neighbors that have been on Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Double Dare, G.U.T.S., Supermarket Sweep, Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?, and American Gladiators… I attribute the high number to a childhood in California. Let me know when you start the ‘Does everyone know someone from a reality television show?’ and I will return to spill the beans about going to school with folks from the Real World.

My mom was on the original Jeopardy back in the early 70′s. She ran the Bible category but ended up coming in second. She won an encyclopedia set that we still had when I was in grade school. You know what’s not a reliable resource on subjects like the moon landing and cancer research? An encyclopedia published in 1970.
