Speaking of your 1992 guilty pleasures, I bought a “90′s Guilty Pleasures” CD from the Pottery Barn outlet yesterday. It contains Color Me Badd “I Adore Mi Amore” AND C&C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” Pure, unadulterated joy.

I did see the win for Stephen Sondheim, though, which is kind of ludicrous.

Of course, it’s no more ludicrous than Lauryn Hill winning best new artist in 1998. But that’s annoying, too.

Agreed! Those nominations are especially frustrating because other people had hits with the songs before the more contemporary acts. I can understand the delayed songwriting nod for “Blue,” since Leann Rimes was the first to make an impact with it, but “Lean On Me?” Really?

And I’ve never found a explanation for why that can happen.

“Unforgettable” winning the award is kind of like when Bill Withers won it for Club Nouveau’s “Lean On Me” cover almost 20 years after the fact…and kind of like Sondheim winning it for Judy Collins’ “Send In the Clowns.” Why weren’t they just nominated in Record?
