It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for the Friday music quiz! You know, where a reader shuffles his/her iPod, then lists the first lines from the first 30 songs that come up. It’s up to us to provide the artist and title of each song. Kick ass!
Basic rules: Post your answers in the comments section, don’t use the internet to look up lyrics, and please don’t supply more than three answers per day.
For last week’s quiz, go here.

13–”They Can’t Take that Away From Me” by George and Ira Gershwin, although I have no idea whose recording. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s Harry Groener’s, from the OBC of Crazy for You.

29 – (Keep Feeling) Fascination ~ Human League
Why are these first line quizzes so much harder than those 80′s lyric quizzes that circulated all those years ago? I’m not complaining, mind you, just observing.

17 -Lovely Day by Bill Withers
7 Kris // Mar 27, 2009 at 2:37 pm
#13 is Randy Newman’s “I Think it’s Going to Rain Today,” but it’s been covered by so many people I can’t begin to guess who this particular performer is.
8 Kris // Mar 27, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Aaaargh! #12 for Randy Newman, not #13.
9 Emily WK // Mar 27, 2009 at 2:44 pm

12 Sarah // Mar 27, 2009 at 2:54 pm
#17 is Lovely Day, but it’s by several groups…I have this song by Out of Eden, but I’m certain that isn’t the one listed here.

Nice work so far, guys!
Rube, I think these quizzes are harder because they don’t rely on hit songs the way the 80s quizzes do. When people are randomly shuffling from their iPods, they’re likely to pull up songs by obscure bands or album tracks from popular artists that were never on the radio.
I’ve got a massive quiz about hit nineties songs that I wrote myself a few years ago. What do you think, folks… should I post that there sometime?
16 Lisa // Mar 27, 2009 at 3:53 pm
A massive quiz about hit nineties songs might actually be something I could actually get an answer right on, so I say do it.
17 Mary // Mar 27, 2009 at 4:03 pm
I think the difficulty is contextual too. If someone else put these up, I’m not sure I’d immediately recognize them, even though I own them. Without the music to cue me, I have to work harder to recognize lyrics. That made sense in my head…

#8 – Beastie Boys – The New Style
19 Ebeth // Mar 27, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Ooh! 90s quiz! But I do feel better than everyone else is as stumped as I am…
20 Jamie // Mar 27, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I finally know one! #4 is “It’s Only Natural” by Crowded House. I listened to that album (Woodface) approximately one frillion times in college.
21 Jamie // Mar 27, 2009 at 4:21 pm
#8 is “The New Style” by the Beastie Boys. Looks like Mary M. and I like the same stuff!
22 Destiny // Mar 27, 2009 at 4:35 pm
6. Every time we say goodbye- well, everybody has sung this one, but I’m guessing Ella Fitzgerald or Annie Lennox.
23 Kris // Mar 27, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Is #9, “Summer Rain, taps at my window…?” I don’t remember who sang it, though.
24 Mary // Mar 27, 2009 at 7:06 pm
All correct so far:
Jamie–I think I listened to nothing but Woodface for a year. “Four Seasons In One Day is one of my favorite songs. And I wore out my “Licensed to Ill” cassette in high school.
#6 is the Ella version.
25 Lucy // Mar 27, 2009 at 10:27 pm
#20: Dropkick Murphys, “The Gauntlet”
26 Maggie // Mar 28, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Yeah, I only knew “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” but I would LOVE a big 90′s songs quiz!
27 Christine // Mar 30, 2009 at 12:54 pm
#3 is “Sukie in the Graveyard” by Belle & Sebastian.
28 Adam // Apr 20, 2009 at 7:05 am
