quizindex

Are you ready for the ultimate 90s music quiz? Because that’s what this post contains, y’all. It’s like a flannel and dance-pop explosion.

After the jump, you will find 205 lines from 205 songs of the 90s. You supply artist and title.

You can play along by reading below, and if you get stumped, you can find the answers here.

I’d love for lots of people to enjoy this quiz, which I first wrote as an undergrad in the summer of 2000., so please feel free to forward it to family , friends, and co-workers.

And before we begin, let me say this: I created this quiz without any reference materials, so I challenge you to complete it without them, too. Sure, you could use Google, but where’s the fun in that?

Finally, use the comments section to ask each other questions and help each other out. I will provides hints as I see fit. (Also, if you’re providing answers in the comments section, please limit them to five per day.)

Let the games begin! (And if you want to play Part II of the quiz, with 105 additional lyrics, go here.)

The 90s Music Quiz: 205 Lines from 205 Songs of the 1990s. You supply the song title and artist.

By MARK BLANKENSHIP

Note: Artists appear only once, except for a few duets/special pairings and group members who later went solo

The songs on this list cover every genre (except show tunes… sorry Rent fans), and they were all reasonably popular in their day. You’ll need a breadth of 90s knowledge to name them all, so teammates are recommended.

I didn’t see a limit on answers per day, but I’ll keep it to three.

    13. I Wish – Skee-Lo (I had almost forgotten about this song, but now I’ll be singing it all night.)

    97. Stay – Lisa Loeb

    197. Criminal – Fiona Apple

  • 2 Amanda // Apr 3, 2009 at 12:54 am

Oh man. This is awesome. I can’t believe you did this sans references, by the way.

    My five:
    9. Friday I’m in Love-The Cure
    12. Iris-The Goo Goo Dolls
    65.Least Complicated-The Indigo Girls
    59. Lightning Crashes-Live
    147. Losing My Religion-REM

  • 3 Cap'n Ganch // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:11 am

    11. Fly – Sugar Ray (God kill me now for knowing that so quickly)

  • 4 Mary // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:14 am

    9. Friday I’m In Love – The Cure

    107. Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) – Digable Planets

    152. Closing Time – Semisonic

  • 5 Cap'n Ganch // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:15 am

    180. Don’t Stop – No Doubt
    164. Flood – Jars of Clay

  • 6 Stef // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:18 am

    200 – “Sabotage” – Beastie Boys
171 – “Walkin’ in Memphis” – Marc Cohn
    139 – “Baby Got Back” – Sir Mix-a-Lot
44 – “This is How We Do It” – Montell Jordan

    etc. etc. etc.

Quite the stroll down memory lane there … now I’ll have a lovely hodge-podge of songs looping through my brain all night.

  • 7 Jennifer // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:20 am

Sticking with the three per day non-rule:

    2. Informer – Snow
    181. OPP – Naughty by Nature
    205. Bad Boys – Inner Circle

This is fun! I can totally go into the next couple lines of the song, but have trouble coming up with the song and artist.

  • 8 Sarah // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:22 am

I’m so sorry! I didn’t see there was a day limit. So, don’t post my previous answer, I guess. Oops.

My post, according to the rules.

    171. Walking in Memphis, Marc Cohn
    180. Don’t Speak, No Doubt
    187. I’m Only Happy When It Rains, Garbage
    192. You Gotta Be, Des’ree
    197. Criminal, Fiona Apple

  • 9 Kevin M. Keating // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:27 am

    Cap’n, I think you mean “Don’t Speak” for 180.

A few more (choosing ones that I hope make me sound cool).

    128. “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia

    51. “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. (Which actually came out in 88, Mark, but I’m guessing you’re thinking of its 1993-ish appearance in Benny & Joon!)

  • 10 Jennifer // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:34 am

Ooh. Saw it was 5 a day.

    41. Supermodel – RuPaul
    135. I love Your Smile – Shanice

  • 11 Lee // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:37 am

Maggie – you can go with 5 per day…
    My Five:
    1) Informer – Snow
    5) Freedom – George Michael
    6) Alive – Pearl Jam
    18) Undone (The Sweater Song) – Weezer
    65) Least Complicated – Indigo Girls

Can’t wait to cogitate on these for the next week. Some of them are already driving me crazy!

  • 12 Jen // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:37 am

I’m starting at the top, just for the heck of it:
    6. Jeremy — Pearl Jam
    9. Friday I’m In Love — the Cure
    10. What’s Up? — 4 Non-Blondes
    12. Iris — The Goo Goo Dolls
    18. Sweater Song — Weezer

I’m chaffing at this 5 song limit! I was a lyrics junkie in the 90s–this is my idea of a test!

  • 13 Jen // Apr 3, 2009 at 1:38 am

Ps. I meant, “this is my idea of an EXCELLENT test.” Not as if it were my idea to create such a test.

  • 14 Mark Blankenship // Apr 3, 2009 at 2:16 am

Thanks to those who re-posted with shorter lists of answers. Much appreciated. Five per day lets more people climb on board the train.

  • 15 Mark Blankenship // Apr 3, 2009 at 2:18 am

p.s. — In my opinion, number three is the hardest one, though I did play it all the time on the jukebox at the Pizza Hut near Northgate Mall in Chattanooga.

(And if you’re from Chattanooga… yes, I said Northgate.)

  • 16 Maggie // Apr 3, 2009 at 3:25 am

  • 26 Stef // Apr 3, 2009 at 10:39 am

Yeah, #3 drove me crazy all night

    Keedy – Save Some Love

(Don’t ask … I don’t think I can forgive myself for dredging that one from memory).

What does it say, though, that I remember the song, but have absolutely NO recollection of there being a Northgate Mall?!? Obviously I wasn’t incarcerated long enough.

  • 27 Mary // Apr 3, 2009 at 10:43 am

    Ooh…limit of 5 means I get 2 more!

    14. I Got A Man – Positive K

    66. Loser – Beck

This is fantastic, by the way.

  • 28 Mark Blankenship // Apr 3, 2009 at 10:46 am

Stef, I tip my hat to you. I thought I was the only person left who remembered Keedy!

Also, Northgate Mall is in Hixson, where I lived until we moved to East Brainerd. You probably just never had a reason to go to that side of the river.

  • 29 Mark Blankenship // Apr 3, 2009 at 10:49 am

I’m very impressed everyone. A nice range of knowledge on display! Clearly, we all spent the 90s watching the same videos and listening to the same radio stations on the school bus. Wait… were you guys all on Bus 49 in Hamilton County?

  • 30 ferretrick // Apr 3, 2009 at 11:27 am

    60. Carnival, Natalie Merchant

    68. Foolish Games, Jewel

    71. Birdhouse In Your Soul, They Might Be Giants

    99. Bitch, Merdith Brooks

Somebody please figure out 79, 97, 126, and 134. In all those cases, I can even hear the song in my head, but can’t come up with it and its driving me mad.

In other news, I also feel old now. Thanks, Mark.

57 – “Ice, Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice
62 – “Pretty Fly for a White Guy” by Offsrping
    67 – “3 A.M.” by Matchbox 20

Those are the ones I know both song and band.

112 is an Eminem song, 43 is by Stone Temple Pilots, 120 is the Elton John song from “Lion King”, but I can’t come up with titles without searching. 33 continues “but you say I’m just a friend” but singing that doesn’t get me any closer.

    80. “I Wanna Sex You Up,” Color Me Badd (now stuck in my head)
    86. “Ironic,” Alanis Morrissette
    97. “Stay,” Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories
    112. “My Name is,” Eminem

  • 39 Jen // Apr 3, 2009 at 3:27 pm

    56. Longview — Green Day
    192. You Gotta Be — Desire’e

(Had to post these two as they were the first 2 tapes I bought! What a combo!)

  • 40 A Different Jen than #12 & #39 // Apr 3, 2009 at 6:08 pm

    70. If, Janet Jackson
    105. Summertime, Wil Smith
(unless I’m wrong, because I thought the line was: “You’re invited to a BBQ that started at 4″ — he’s running late.)
    165. Mama Said Knock You Out, L.L. Cool J
    167. Gonna Make You Sweat, C+C Music Factory
    188. Tom’s Diner, Suzanne Vega

I knew other, more esoteric ones, but others got to them first. Really!

    116. She won a Grammy for that album, but I can only remember the song title, not her name. I’m having that problem a lot.

  • 41 K. // Apr 3, 2009 at 6:11 pm

    116. The artist is Shawn Colvin (I’ve already used my five for the day so I can’t give the name!).

  • 42 Mark Blankenship // Apr 3, 2009 at 6:12 pm

@Jen — Whoops! I did leave out one word from #105. Corrected!

  • 43 Lee // Apr 3, 2009 at 6:19 pm

If ANYONE can get 117, I will be forever in your debt. It is causing me anxiety that I don’t know the song…
    Ahh good times.

  • 44 arford // Apr 3, 2009 at 7:16 pm

    32. Gin and Juice – Snoop Dogg
    83. Beauty and the Beast – the Disney flick
    106. Two Princes – Spin Doctors
    150. Saved the Best for Last – Mariah Carey
    157. One of Us – Joan Osborne

Weirdly, I recognized some songs that I despised on the first pass, but totally missed some songs that I loved until others pointed them out.

  • 45 Maria // Apr 3, 2009 at 8:11 pm

Lee – 117 is “Seven” by Prince. (or was he The Artist then?) Was also making me nuts!

  • 46 Maria // Apr 3, 2009 at 8:15 pm

    Shit, didn’t mean to post.

116 – “Sunny Came Home” by Shawn Colvin

122 – “Last Dance With Mary Jane” by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

154 – SHOOT ME for knowing this is “All-Star” by Smashmouth

173 – “Cumbersome” by Seven Mary Three

  • 47 KKB // Apr 3, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Wow. So much love for these songs. Even the ones I’m kind of embarrassed to publicly admit that I know!

150 – is, I think, Vanessa Williams, not Mariah Carey? (It was post Playboy scandal, and I seem to recall an In Living Color Parody called “You Can All Kiss My Ass”)

116 –”Sunny Came Home” by Shawn Colvin
    117 – “7″ by Prince
    27 – “Move This” C+C Music Factory
48 – “Hard to Handle” by the Black Crows

  • 48 Nina // Apr 3, 2009 at 9:51 pm

    148 – Philadelphia – Bruce Springsteen
165 Mama said Knock You Out – LL Cool J

  • 49 Different Jen // Apr 4, 2009 at 3:11 am

    159. A Kiss for a Rose, Seal
    183. Groove is in the Heart, Dee-Lite
    201. No Diggity, Blackstreet

I’m so addicted to this! It’s like that damn Intelligence Test (4 S of the Y, etc.), where you mull and mull…

Let’s see if 118 and 189 come to me in my sleep.

  • 50 Maria // Apr 4, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Amazing what sleeping on it can do for the brain.

73 – “To Be With You” by Mr. Big

85 – “Right Now” by Van Halen

    89 – “Stay” by Shakespeare’s Sister (LOVE!)

189 – “Don’t Want to Fall in Love” by Jane Child

    108) More Than Words – Extreme

  • 52 K. // Apr 4, 2009 at 12:25 pm

    69. “I Believe,” Blessid Union of Souls
    91. “All Night Long,” Cathy Dennis (90210 prom episode, anyone?)
    176. “Jump Around,” House of Pain (“I’ll serve your ass like John McEnroe …”)
    190. “Big Poppa”, Notorious BIG

Different Jen, want a hint for 118?

  • 53 Mary // Apr 4, 2009 at 2:11 pm

    115. Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) – US3

    118. Hey Jealousy – Gin Blossoms

    137. Now That We’ve Found Love – Heavy D and the Boyz

    186. Linger – The Cranberries

Is 96 Digital Underground’s “The Humpty Dance”? I remember the line being “…my Humpty nose”, but I can’t imagine there were that many other songs about nose tickling 69.

  • 54 Maggie // Apr 4, 2009 at 3:10 pm

    101. I Love You Always Forever – Donna Lewis
    50. Motownphilly – Boyz II Men

  • 56 Jennifer // Apr 4, 2009 at 6:08 pm

    125. Closer – Nine Inch Nails
    166. C’mon Ride the Train, C’mon Ride it (Choo Choo) – Ginuwine (there probably aren’t parentheses in the song title, but it’s just so much to finish singing it.)
    50. Motown Philly – Boys II Men
    96. Humpty Dance – Digital Underground
    98. Tubthumper – Chumba Wumba

  • 57 Jennifer // Apr 4, 2009 at 6:09 pm

Wait — think I posted too soon. Should be Tubthumping.

  • 58 Different Jen // Apr 4, 2009 at 7:33 pm

    Another one finally shook loose!

    104. Smooth — Santana and Rob Thomas

(Thanks, Maria for 189. I never would’ve known the artist.)

  • 59 Maria // Apr 4, 2009 at 9:11 pm

@Different Jen – right back atcha for 104. That was making me nuts!

  • 60 KKB // Apr 4, 2009 at 11:10 pm

Thanks for #20, K — It’s been nagging at me; could’ve sworn it was Chris Isaak, since he’s got at least seven songs with a variation on that line.

    158 — I Can’t Dance — Joan Jett (sans Blackhearts)
    111 — How Bizarre — OMC
74 — All I Want — Toad the Wet Sprocket
144 — How Do You Talk To An Angel — The Heights

87 — Hold My Hand — Hootie and the Blowfish (All the things I’ve forgotten over the years and I still know this? WHY?)

  • 61 Maggie // Apr 5, 2009 at 1:37 am

    Thanks for #87, KKB!

I kept trying to make it that line from Usher’s U Got It Bad that goes “promise to love you the best I can.” But I knew that wasn’t right.

I can totally hear “Hold My Hand” now.

  • 62 K. // Apr 5, 2009 at 10:39 am

    Five more:

    49. “Doo Wop (That Thing),” Lauryn Hill
    143. “If You Had My Love,” Jennifer Lopez
    149. “Are You That Somebody,” Aaliyah
    153. “Sittin’ Up In My Room,” Brandy
    198. “Give Me One Reason,” Tracy Chapman

  • 63 Joe Martin // Apr 5, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Young MC-”Bust a Move”. “Don’t hang yourself on a celibate rope”. One of the greatest songs ever: has a guitar riff to equal that super famous pop rap song by Aaron Carter (“Jump on It”?), the finesse of Run DMC, and subject matter anyone can identify with.

  • 64 Maggie // Apr 5, 2009 at 2:02 pm

And five more (hey, I’m sick with pretty much nothing else to do ;-)

    23. This Kiss – Faith Hill
    77. Backstreet’s Back – Backstreet Boys
    81. I Saw the Sign – Ace of Base
    104. Crazy – Aerosmith
    110. Boot Scootin’ Boogie – Brooks & Dunn

I know #94, but I cannot come up with the artist. I’m not sure I ever knew it.

  • 65 Jen K // Apr 5, 2009 at 9:04 pm

94 is Ghetto Superstar, and I’m pretty sure that’s Wyclef post-Fugees, but I can’t remember who the girl is.

More when I have time to concentrate, but I’m being reminded of things to get on iTunes.

  • 66 Maria // Apr 5, 2009 at 9:40 pm

Wasn’t Mya the girl singer in Ghetto Superstar?

And yeah, between this quiz and the VH1 80s One-Hit Wonders all week, my iTunes shopping list is getting loooooooooooong.

  • 67 Kim // Apr 5, 2009 at 10:01 pm

    43. Plush by Stone Temple Pilots
    121. Signs by Tesla (which was a remake)
    123. Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton
    169. Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz
    182. I Touch Myself by DiVinyls

  • 68 joe // Apr 6, 2009 at 11:12 am

Ghetto Superstar is Pras, post-Fugees. And yes, Mya is the girl. This list is gonna end up costing me $50 in iTunes costs. THANKS A LOT!

  • 69 Different Jen // Apr 6, 2009 at 1:48 pm

    105. Amended to say that, according to my iPod (and I hope this isn’t cheating, it came up in rotation last night) the full title is “Summertime ‘98,” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. I thought WS had dropped that persona by then, but I guess not.

Is anyone else smacking themselves in the head for not knowing some of these? OF COURSE 182. is “I Touch Myself.” How I didn’t know it right away is amazing. I think it has to do with reading the words vs. hearing them (a la ‘Name That Tune’).

  • 70 Mark Blankenship // Apr 6, 2009 at 2:37 pm

    Hey Different Jen,

I think you’re listening to the remix they put on some greatest hits album. (I also randomly have it, though I don’t know why.) The original “Summertime” dropped in 1991, back when The Fresh Prince was still in full effect.

  • 71 Jen K // Apr 7, 2009 at 12:45 pm

@Maria – thanks, it was bugging me! And Joe, thanks for setting the record straight on which Fugee it was. Wyclef’s the only one I ever hear about, unless Lauryn Hill’s being all crazy. Poor Pras, it’s like he’s the middle child.

Also bugging me, so to speak:

#61 – What Would You Say – Dave Matthews band

And OMG there are some artist corrections I want to make (…irony) but I don’t want to be a prissy smartypants.

  • 72 Nina // Apr 7, 2009 at 1:52 pm

I believe #142 is Black or White by Michael Jackson
#136 is Finally by CC Peniston

#141 – You’ve Got the Music in You, The New Radicals

  • 75 Alexandra // Apr 9, 2009 at 5:17 pm

    47. Celine Dion – It’s All Coming Back To Me Now
    I object to 79. I think it’s Cher – Believe
120 has been done, but isn’t it Circle of Life, not Can You Feel The Love Tonight?
    135. Life Is A Highway – Rascal Flatts
    141. The New Radicals – isn’t the song title “You Only Get What You Give”
Isn’t that line from 202 in Natural Born Hippies – Lola (The Kinks original) as well?

  • 76 Lissa // Apr 9, 2009 at 9:32 pm

    138. Coolio, Fantastic Voyage
