After an eight-month delay, The Brothers Bloom is finally coming to theaters. Will the wait have been worth it? Let’s find out… after the jump.Â
The Movie: The Brothers Bloom (opening May 29)
The Buzz: Writer-director Rian Johnson made Brick, a noir picture set in a modern high school, and for a follow-up, he’s made a whimsically stylized caper film starring all sorts of Oscar-friendly actors. Buzz for this movie was good… until it’s release got pushed from October 2008 to May 2009. Now the film has gotten lost amid breathless reports that Wolverine is available on some teenager’s computer. Will this quirky picture be crushed by summer tentpoles?
The Trailer:Â
The Review: I’ve gotta say… I’m intrigued. Brick was way too much for me—way too proud of its coolness, way too full of posturing young actors—but the trailer makes The Brothers Bloom seem effervescent. Could it give us Rian Johnson without the obvious effort?
It helps that I’m always a fan of light-hearted hijinks, especially served in a quirky visual palette, and it looks like Rachel Weisz has flung herself into the fizzy spirit of things. A movie like this can easily tip over into cutsey-poo phoniness, of course, but the preview’s tone is perfect. Then again, so was the tone in The Great Buck Howard’s trailer, and that movie was all sorts of leaden. You never know.
Bonus points for making me consider seeing a movie with Adrien Brody in it.
The Ranking: Three quirky hats (out of five)

I love caper movies. I see them all, despite the fact that they are often suckola. Love ‘em anyway.
