Okay… if I were super-duper-extra hip, then I would have started listening to rock singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson in late 2007.
That’s when Perez Hilton praised his album Sounds Like This and accurately described his sound as “the best bits of John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and Jack Johnson.” I’d add 70s-era Rolling Stones and Elton John to the list, but you get the idea… Eric Hutchinson is a good, old-fashioned rocker. His songs are well-crafted and well-performed, and they make me really happy. My toes tap, my head bobs… it’s an instant good mood.
And to think I didn’t even know the dude existed until last week, when iTunes suggested I might like his album. Since it was only $7.99, and my friend Stephanie thoughtfully sent me an iTunes gift card a few days ago, I figured, “Why not?”
Now I owe the iTunes “You Might Like” faeries a basket of citrus fruit, because they obviously know me very well. I mean, how can you avoid jamming to a song like, “OK, It’s Alright With Me?”
See what I mean about the happy-making? You also may have heard Hutchinson’s single “Rock and Roll,” which has been getting some airplay and been selling pretty well. That one makes me want to drive around a beach with the window down.
The fact that this party record boasts serious musical chops makes it that much more enjoyable, and that fact that it’s got a throwback, seventies vibe means I can share with my dad, which I appreciate.
So good on you, E-Hutch. Good on you!

Awesome, Maggie. Glad you dig him! Once you’ve listened a bit, I’d love to know what your favorite songs are.

Wow–nice sounds and I really like the incorporation of graphic design into the video (type geek here).

Hey Mark! I’m so glad you decided to put my gift to good use
I love Eric Hutchinson! I had already purchased “Rock & Roll” and ” Ok, It’s Alright with Me” before I read your post a few weeks ago and it’s on my constant playlist rotation. Totally agree. It makes for great sunny driving music.

So, Allen and I are on this road trip, right. And I have fallen behind on my CC reading. But let me just tell you that we have been listening to E-Hutch since late 2007 and scratching our heads about why he hasn’t blown up. Yesterday while driving I put the iPod on Top 25 most played, and FIVE of the songs were Eric Hutchinson songs. Thanks for writing about him! Definitely a keeper. (And an excellent album to occupy your mind and vocal cords while driving the lonely highways out west!)
