Welcome to your Friday iPod Quiz.
The Rules: I have put my iPod on shuffle. After the jump, I will list 30 lines from the first 30 songs that it plays. You provide artist and title. (Note: I will not necessarily list the first line of the song.)
Please don’t look up the lyrics on the web. That’s lame.
And please don’t provide more than three answers per day. That way, more people can play.
The Answers: Will be posted in the comments section of this post next Friday. You can find the answers to last week’s quiz here.
Now let’s do this thing!

28. “Hole Hearted” by Extreme

1) Hello and Goodbye from Evita. Do I win some kind of Obscure Numbers from Musicals category for this one?
3) Another Mystery, Dar Williams
22) You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman-Carole King, I hope, because her version is better,
30) Make Your Own Kind of Music, Mama Cass-I also love this song.
11 Betty // Aug 14, 2009 at 1:44 pm
#29 is Death Cab’s Title and Registration. I think the lyric is really “the glove compartment is inaccurately named.” Close enough though.
12 benvolio // Aug 14, 2009 at 2:17 pm
1. I think the name of this is “Good Night and Thank You” and (1 of three chance here) Patti Lupone.
6. Hey Jack Kerouac: 10000 Maniacs
9. P olaroids: Shawn Colvin
13 Mark Blankenship // Aug 14, 2009 at 2:20 pm
@ Betty — Is it “inaccurately?” I agonized over that. Because that would make more sense, but to me, it really sounds like he’s saying “isn’t accurately.”
14 Mark Blankenship // Aug 14, 2009 at 2:21 pm
Ferretrick and benvolio, you both get the obscure musical numbers prize!
15 Karen // Aug 14, 2009 at 2:45 pm
15. Isobel–Bjork
22. My phone’s on vibrate-Rufus Wainwright
Other people already got the NMH.

#12 The End of Medicine – The New Pornographers
And I’ll guess Laura Nyro w/ LaBelle for 21
17 Caitlin // Aug 14, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Whee-I know one! Every week the ones I know are already guessed by the time I get here! (I was hoping I’d be the first to get the Evita one, but of course not…)
17) “Find The River” -REM
18 arford // Aug 14, 2009 at 4:20 pm
12. The End of Medicine – New Pornographers (I cheated a little, I knew the song and album but I had to grab the CD case to remember the actual title)
19 cayenne // Aug 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm
#2 is “Crimson & Clover”, which has been done by half the world, it seems. I’m guessing it’s not Tommy James & the Shondells, but maybe Dolly Parton. Or Joan Jett. One of those.
20 jmd // Aug 14, 2009 at 4:34 pm
#5 is “Kyrie” by Mister Mister
and for the rhyme…
#27 is “Breakout” by Swing Out Sister
21 Megan M // Aug 14, 2009 at 4:35 pm
25. Keep Holding On – Avril Lavigne
22 Gonzalo // Aug 14, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Since there was an added incentive to guess the artist, maybe #21 (“You Really Got a Hold On Me”) is the She & Him cover?
23 Mark Blankenship // Aug 14, 2009 at 6:43 pm
@arford — I feel like grabbing the CD case doesn’t count as cheating. Right? Because you had it right there, and you knew which CD to reach for.
@jmd — Thanks for the sweet rhyming answer!
@Caitlin — I’m glad you got first dibs on “Find the River.” I hadn’t thought about that song in a while, so it was nice to have it come up on my iPod
24 Mark Blankenship // Aug 14, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Hey everyone — Great job so far. From Shawn Colvin to Neutral Milk Hotel, it seems like we’ve got all the musical bases covered. (Except for the country songs on there. Where my cowboys at?)
Also — Gonzalo and Cayenne get the 6,000 bonus points.
Of the several “Crimson and Clover” versions on my iPod, the one that came up was by Dolly Parton. (If you don’t know her all-covers album “Those Were the Days,” then do yourself a favor and give it a listen.)
And it was indeed She & Him, the awesome collaboration between Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, the provided the cover of “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me.”
But if you guessed the song correctly, you should still hold your head up high.
25 benvolio // Aug 14, 2009 at 7:03 pm
“Kyrie” didn’t come to me for hours, while I wrestled with the damn ear worm. Well done, jmd.
But that buries the lede: Mister Mister is on your ipod? There might be laws against that….
26 Jennifer // Aug 14, 2009 at 9:42 pm
21. Linda Ronstadt version
27 cayenne // Aug 14, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Yay, 6,000 points! Does this get me a flight to Topeka?
28 Lee // Aug 15, 2009 at 4:04 am
19) Why, Tracy Chapman
And I totally knew number one, but others beat me to it!
29 Doug // Aug 15, 2009 at 10:28 am
18) Green Day, “Homecoming?”
30 Mark Blankenship // Aug 15, 2009 at 11:51 am
@ Doug. Yes! Really, that quote comes from several songs on the “American Idiot” album, but “Homecoming” is the one that came up for me.
31 Mark Blankenship // Aug 15, 2009 at 11:52 am
@ Cayenne — You can either take a flight to Topeka or this paper bag full of mystery prizes.
32 Gonzalo // Aug 15, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Woot woot! I agree with Mark, the She & Him album is truly truly amazing. Thouhg, ironically enough, “You Really Got a Hold On Me” is my least favorite song in there.
As for those 6,000 points, do they expire or can I accumulate them to gain access to the better prizes? I was told there’s a juice maker once I get to 74,500.
33 Caroline // Aug 15, 2009 at 6:25 pm
I think #24 is “Hard Way” by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Great song. The whole album it’s on is fantastic.
34 CaseyW // Aug 16, 2009 at 5:34 pm
11. Kerosene — Miranda Lambert
35 Mark Blankenship // Aug 16, 2009 at 5:51 pm
@ Caroline and CaseyW — Both correct! Way to represent the country selections.
36 Mark Blankenship // Sep 3, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Hey everyone… great job!
The only song that nobody guessed is #15, which is “The Lion & The Tea Cup” by Bishop Allen. They’re a fantastic indie rock band. Definitely check them out!
