So before I get to today’s topic, I have to tell you a story about middle school, moderate activism, and my mom.
You see, I was always a… well… a hyper-vigilant student. Like, why get a 95 on a test when you can get a 102? And when I was in seventh grade, there was this thing where none of the teachers in the honors classes were coordinating with each other, so they were all assigning big projects and tests and book reports at the same time. There would be several weeks of nothing major followed by two weeks of BOOMBOOMBOOM. And for me, this was not good. It meant that I was basically working nonstop. And I know, I know… that’s how it is in college and grad school, but when you’re twelve, it’s a little overwhelming. So my mom, a veteran teacher herself, actually called one of my teachers to mention thi scheduling problem, and guess what? The teacher agreed with her. Whoa! And the logjam broke up for the rest of the year. It was possible to good work in all my classes without going insane.
I bring this up because I would like my mom (or someone like her) to call the TV networks and explain that we’ve got a similar situation right now with the programming schedule.
See, I consider myself the member of a fairly targetable demographic—I like smart, well-written shows with either a modicum of gay appeal or a hefty amount of pandering to my college-educated sensibilities. What’s more, I like to watch television. Hell, since I’ve got a DVR and the ready-made excuse that I “watch TV for my work,” I like to watch too much television. I’m the hyper-vigilant A-student of watching television, so if something looks good or critically acclaimable or hot-boy-filled, I will give it a shot.
Even better for the networks, I’m fairly easily pleased, and if I dig a show, I will keep watching.
But since I’m giving the networks so much, can’t they honor my commitment by backing off me a little bit? Right now, the following shows that I like-to-love are all airing new episodes:
Lost
RuPaul’s Drag Race
RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked
The Amazing Race
Project Runway
Models of the Runway
30 Rock
The Office
Shear Genius
Ugly Betty
Community
Modern Family
Big Love
and the Winter Olympics
What the hell, people? Add in the March return of Flash Forward and Law & Order anda brother cannot catch a break. I do like to do other things, you know? I like to go out once in a while. See a friend. See a movie. Reflect quietly. Read. Couldn’t the networks space this shit out a little bit? Wouldn’t it be better for them and for me if they gave me some breathing room? At the very least, couldn’t the next Amazing Race have waited until after the Olympics?
Thanks to this overload, I’ve already dropped lesser favorites like Shear Genius and Ugly Betty, and it’s not looking good for RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked, frankly. But I wish I didn’t have to make these choices.
Is this a failure of scheduling from TV land? Is it an unavoidable byproduct of there being so many channels now? Is it the happy conundrum of a TV culture that’s delivering so much great material? Am I crackpot for complaining, when really I should just be turning the TV off entirely and spending more time contemplating the health care crisis?
Good questions, all. But all I know is that I’m frustrated because I want to stay pop culturally literate but I don’t want to spend my damn life in front of the TV. What’s a fella to do?

agreed. and love the story about your mother making that call!
I had this problem pretty badly in the Fall, mostly because I watch strange shows that aren’t really considered major competitors. But my Mondays were completely booked with Little People Big World, Jon and Kate, Cake Boss, How I Met Your Mother, House, Lie to Me, and the Lincoln Heights/Secret Life of an American Teenager duo that never run at the same time, but I watch both so there’s always something (I also gave Make it or Break it a try, but I lost interest, and it’s a good thing I did).
Even with DVR I had to catch my TLC shows in second run and the ABCFamily shows online in order to get everything in. And when you do episode reviews on a blog, it gets out of control FAST!

Amy! Thank you for sharing my pain. I hadn’t thought about the problem of watching shows on smaller networks that aren’t necessarily considered in competition with each other. God forbid we should ever want to go outside, right?

Yeah…I have a spreadsheet to spread everything I want to watch over two TiVos with a total of four tuners. I have one of those jobs where where I’m either working 12-16 hour days or I’m unemployed. The stints of unemployment are pretty much the only way I ever catch up, so I tend to set my viewing priorities by “What is going to get ruined for me if I don’t watch it immediately?” vs. “What can I reasonably expect to avoid spoilers for?”

I’m totally feeling the pain. I like the TV medium. A lot. I like connecting with characters (real or fictional) on a weekly basis, and I try to watch anything that is critically acclaimed or seems particularly interesting. And TV seems to be an embarrassment of riches right now. I seem to have 3 piles of shows: must watch, “always almost caught up” (i.e. the shows that I really like, but that somehow never make it as a top priority so there’s usually 2 or 3 eps piling up on my DVR or Hulu queue), and then stuff I’ve pretty much dropped (usually it’s for good reasons, but I always have the hope that I will catch up eventually, but probably never will). Let me see if I can make a list – square brackets around the shows currently on hiatus.
Must: Lost, Chuck, 30 Rock, The Office, Fringe, Community, Modern Family, Cougar Town, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Damages, Supernatural, [Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Dexter, Flash Forward, V, Glee, Better Off Ted, Nurse Jackie]
Always almost caught up: House, The Mentalist, Big Love, Ugly Betty, Castle, Bones, Human Target, The Good Wife, [It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Friday Night Lights, United States of Tara, Trauma (I know, it's a lame show, but it's set AND filmed in San Francisco for a change, and I love being familiar with the streets and neighborhoods)]. And last, my friend and I have started catching with S1 of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo’s website – so far, I’m loving it and hoping to catch up in time for the S2 finale!
Recently dropped: Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Caprica, CSI, Burn Notice, Project Runway, So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol
Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever made a list before. That looks scary. I do make a big effort to keep going out, work, and hanging out with friends more of a priority. But watching movies or reading? I hardly ever do that anymore, because I always have some TV waiting to be watched.
Mark, I have to question the love for Models of the Runway. I watched the first two or three eps last season, and I thought it was a waste of time, almost unwatchable. Has it gotten better? Or is it a question of brand loyalty/not wanting to miss out on PR-related things?

Hey Gonzalo — For me, “Models of the Runway” is all about being a “Project Runway” completist, so I never actually watch the portions that don’t deal with Runway designers. That means I get through every episode in about 3 minutes, and I STILL get too much information about whatever lame-ass “crisis” is tearing the models apart.

Fair enough, I can totally understand that. I’m still likely to skip on Models when I finally catch up on this season of PR (last season turned me off a bit, but I’ve heard better things about this one). I might just read Annie Barrett’s recaps on EW instead, in the same way that I still watch Idolatry even though I haven’t been following Idol at all this season.

Oh thank goodness someone has brought this into the light. Mondays are the worst: How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, House, Greek, Intervention, Hoarders, Damages…. it’s all too much for one DVR. I find myself watching Damages, Intervention and Hoarders on the rebroadcasts, way into the late night. And then on other nights there’s “nothing on” at all… at least nothing the Hubs and I agree to watch. But that’s another conversation….

Preach!
I cannot keep up….I’m a paranormal tv show geek, so all the A&E paranormal shows (Paranormal State, Paranormal Cops, Psychic Kids) and then Ghost Hunters (the original and GHI) all interfere with everything else, I’m reaching a point where I can’t keep up! Oh, and I have to mention Supernatural on the WB, that show is awesome! (I teach high school, so I allow myself to watch teenage stuff too so I can stay “cool”) Not to mention that the United States of Tara will be back in March, and that’s a must-watch on my list, and the fact that I do keep up with episode recaps and discussions (like the wonderful ones that happen here, Mark, darling) and I’m losing ground quickly! I just got caught up with Big Love, and I’m still actually an episode behind with that series, so I haven’t been keeping up with your blog and it’s killing me!
Add to all that the fact that I risk a trip to an insane asylum if I don’t record Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Do, and Fan Boy and Chum Chum for my 3 year old, then there is definitely no way I have time to watch and enjoy TV! Ugh!
I didn’t even know the Olympics were going on until I was at my mother’s and she was watching. Can a sista get a break!?
