I haven’t done a Friday iPod Quiz in a long, long time. Ah, the sweet taste of remembrance!
–
The Rules: I have put my iPod on shuffle. After the jump, I will list 30 lines from the first 30 songs that it plays. You provide artist and title. (Note: I will not necessarily list the first line of the song.)
Please don’t look up the lyrics on the web. That’s lame.
And please don’t provide more than three answers per day. That way, more people can play.
The Answers: Will be posted in the comments section of this post next Friday.Â
Now let’s do this thing!
1. Gravel and glass on the bottom of my feet, I bruised my heels on the swollen street
2. Goddamn the people who left you in pain. Goddamn the father without face, without name. (Note: If you can identify this one, then I will give you one squllion ounces of glory. It’s from one of my favorite albums othe nineties.)
3. Frozen, forgetful again: The part where I lose my head.
4. Trunk rattlin’ like two midgets in the backseat wrasslin’
5. What’s the time? Seems it’s already morning. (This song should have been a number one single. Don’t you think?)
6. I could use another cigarette. But don’t worry Daddy, I’m not addicted yet.
7. They say Spain is pretty, though I’ve never been
8. If blood and love taste so sweet, then we, we give ‘em what they want
9. Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage. (If you’re my friends Laura and Stephanie, then you remember listening to this with me as we drove home from school in eleventh grade.)
10. Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me.
11. I hear your voice. It’s like an angel sighing.
12. Ring, ring, ring goes the telephone. The lights are on, but there’s no one home.
13. No one left to finger. No left to blame.
14. You went to school to learn, girl, what you never, never knew before
15. I wore the time like a dress that year
16. Oh my God, can’t believe what I see as I turn on the T.V. This evening.
17. We’ll take the trail marked on your father’s map.
18. The whispers in the morning of lovers sleeping tight
19. From the Hudson River out to the Nile, I run the marathon to the very last mile
20. For five long years, I thought you were my man.
21. Please, baby, can’t you see my mind’s a burning hell?
22. A body like Arnold with a Denzel face
23. And teacher, there are things that I don’t want to learn
24. Or are we dancer?
25. If you want to be with me tonight, show your stuff, ’cause words are not enough
26. Before I put another notch in my lipstick case, you better make sure you put me in my place (This is one of the greatest lyrics in pop history)
27. Two dollars means a snack for me, but it means a big deal to you.
28. In my housedress, don’t you know who I am? Do you know who I am, standing in your kitchen?
29. She’s a good girl. She’s crazy about Elvis.
30. You were so cruel, and I hated bein’ your fool, so I got a little bit more blood on my face.

SB — You are correct: #8 is indeed “Candy Everybody Wants” by 10,000 Maniacs
As for “Comfortably Numb” Interestingly enough, I don’t have Pink Floyd’s version on my iPod, but I do have versions by Scissor Sisters and Dar Williams. (The one that came up for this quiz was by Scissor Sisters.) But of course, you get full credit for listing Pink Floyd, since they certainly did record the song.

#2 is Before You Were Born by Toad the Wet Sprocket
I just came across that CD a day or two ago (reorganizing CD books that have been sitting around for months, now that I’ve got TONS of idle time after my shoulder surgery I finally tackled it.) Who knew it would lead to this?
Also, #19 is Intergalatic by the Beastie Boys
15 Michelle // May 7, 2010 at 6:30 pm
#2 — “Before You Were Born,” Toad the Wet Sprocket. I had that CD on repeat for about a year.
16 Mark Blankenship // May 7, 2010 at 6:57 pm
E and Michelle… Welcome to Gloryville! Hooray! You know what else is great on that album? “Is It For Me.” Such a good song. In 7th grade, my friend Rachel and I wrote a play based on it.
17 Gonzalo // May 7, 2010 at 7:45 pm
#3: “Ready”, Kelly Clarkson. One of my top 3 songs from that album (which says a lot, given how much I still love it)
#5: I think it’s “Spending My Time”, Roxette. Right?
That’s all I’ve got.
18 Mark Blankenship // May 7, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Gonzalo, you are right on both counts! What are you other two faves on the Kelly Clarkson album? My top three are “Don’t Let Me Stop You” (which is far and away my number one), “Cry,” and “Long Shot.” But really, I love the whole thing.
19 Gonzalo // May 7, 2010 at 8:59 pm
I remember having similar exchanges over our favorites KC songs when I first started reading TCC. Current top 3 (it changes often) is “Ready”, “Whyyawannabringmedown”, and “I Do Not Hook Up”. But “Don’t Let Me Stop You” is probably number 4 – and contains the single coolest moment of the CD: “If that’s not what you’re looking for, nice knowing you but there’s the door, cause I know that I could someone who’ll give me what I want”. That build-up is crazy good, no matter how many times I hear it.
Woah! Sorry for the extended tangent. Back to song quizzing!

#23 is One More Try by George Michael.

9. “Rat in a Cage” Smashing Pumpkins. Good stuff.
12. “Hung Up” Madonna. I’m 99%, not 100% that’s right, but I don’t wanna be lame and look it up.
19. “Intergalactic” Beastie Boys- My favorites!! If you liked that version, you should check out the original (very Ill Communication):

27. “Mr Wendell” Arrested Development. Weirdly, I was listening to this earlier today.
29. “Free Fallin’” Tom Petty. Petty initially didn’t take this song seriously, and it has since become one of his most enduring.
22 Jessica // May 8, 2010 at 1:04 am
30 – ‘Fighter’, Christina Aguilera?
23 K. // May 8, 2010 at 8:24 pm
I love seeing Roxette mentioned anywhere (#5 is indeed “Spendin’ My Time”) – the first boy I ever kissed dedicated “Fadin’ Like a Flower” to me on the radio and sixth grade me bought the Joyride tape and wore it out listening to it and thinking about that boy.
The only ones that haven’t been gotten yet that I know (that’s what I get for coming late to the party) are:
25. “Prove Your Love,” Taylor Dane
28. “Stealing Kisses,” Faith Hill (I’m not happy that I know that)
30. “Time Will Do The Talking,” Patty Griffin
24 ferretrick // May 10, 2010 at 6:18 am
18. “The Power of Love” – Celine Dion
